  1. Read Mark 14:10-11 & Luke 22:3-6

Judas was chosen by Jesus as one of his closest Twelve. With the other disciples he shared a persistent misunderstanding of Jesus mission. The true motivation for Judas betrayal is unclear in the text. Does contemplating Judas actions make you think about your own commitment to God and the presence of God’s Spirit in you?

How has the pain of betrayal impacted your life? Consider both the perspective of the one betrayed and as the role of the betrayer.

  1. Read Mark 14:4-5 & John 12:4-6

Judas leads the rebuke of Mary. Can we be like Judas sometimes in our attitudes toward others?

  1. Read Mark 14:3, 6

What is Jesus asking you to ‘break and pour out’ for him?

What will be your response when others ask why you have done this?

What resources will you sacrifice by this ‘pouring out’? Time, finances, relationships, personal priorities, etc.?

How much is too much devotion to Jesus?

  1. Mark 14:5; Matthew 26:15; Exodus 21:32; Zechariah 11:12-13

Compare and contrast the value of the perfume Mary used to anoint Jesus to the amount of money Judas received.

  1. Read Mark 14:3, 8; Read Mark 14:24

Mary seems to be the only one in the room who understands the value of Jesus. She unabashedly worshiped Jesus without concern for cultural norms or regard to what others might think. She poured out ALL that she had. Do we demonstrate with our lives that we understand Jesus is worth everything we have?

Mark uses the same Greek word for ‘poured out’ referencing Mary in 14:3 and Jesus in 14:24. Mary is taking the very best of what she owns, she breaks it and pours out everything she has. Contrast this with Jesus body being broken and poured out (everything he has) for you.

Does Jesus pouring out his life on the cross reassure you that ‘you are worth it’?

  1. Discuss what you think Phil meant by absurd extravagance.

What does it mean to center ourselves around Jesus? Is there any area you are holding back from him?
