Sermon theme:  Jesus:  The King You Want, or The King You Need?

Primary Scripture Passage:  Mark 11: 1-11

  1. Go back and read Mark 10:32-34 where Jesus’ explains to his disciples what to expect once they finish their journey “up” from Jericho to Jerusalem.  Try to imagine how the disciples were processing what they witnessed in Mark 11: 1-11 with what Jesus had prepared them for.
  2. The crowds who gathered to welcome Jesus to Jerusalem did so, in part, due to some gossip-hype-rumors about Jesus.  Who did they believe Jesus could be, which led to their response?
  3. When you read the minute details shared by Jesus in verses 1-7, what does it tell you about Jesus’ authority over the situation that was about to unfold in the week ahead?
  4. Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem was predicted by the prophet Zechariah.  Read Zechariah 9:9 and discuss three character traits of the “Rightful King of the Jews”.  Compare these with the traits that the crowd wanted in their king.
  5. While the Jewish crowd was mostly concerned with their external bondage to the oppressive Roman empire, from what internal oppressor did the people truly need to be liberated?
  6. When the crowds shouted “Hosanna!” at Jesus’ arrival, what could possibly change in a matter of days to change their shouts to “Crucify him!”?  Discuss the meaning of “Hosanna” that Phil brought out in the sermon.
  7. Read Zechariah 9:10 and discuss some aspects of the Rightful King’s rule that were not necessarily wanted or expected by the crowds.
  8. Jesus’ second coming will be very different from His first.  Read Revelation 19: 11-16.  What differences do you notice?  How many different names for Jesus to you see here?
  9. Close by discussing and praying for people in your life whom you are hoping to point toward King Jesus
