Follow Along with the Message

  1. Jack opened his sermon by displaying a spear and using it as an illustration of our lives as a timeline.
    • Where do you see yourself currently “on the spear”, and how does that picture move you toward the “biblical urgency” that Jack both introduced and models in his life?
  2. Habakkuk reveals a faithful heart that is burdened and full of urgent cries before the LORD  (1:14)
    • Jack shared that the name “Habakkuk” means “to embrace” and labeled the prophet as a “why-er”, one crying out “Why God?” and not letting go.  Reflect on your times of prayer; what is the “cry of your heart?
  3. Habakkuk hears the charge of the LORD from heaven: 'Behold among the nations and wonder marvelously'  (1:5-11)
    • God’s response to Habakkuk’s pleas is not exactly the answer that he was hoping for.  Have you ever prayed for a trial in your life to be taken away, but God’s sovereign answer is that you remain in the trial?  How did/how would such a scenario impact your faith  (i.e solidify or cause doubt)?
  4. Habakkuk knows and trusts the unfailing character and perfections of the LORD  (1:12-13)
    • Can you find examples in Habakkuk’s second complaint (v. 12-17) that illustrate his knowledge of and trust in the unfailing character and perfections of the LORD?
  5. Habakkuk teaches us how to 'posture' our individual lives and entire situations before the LORD (2:1-3)
    • Jack urged us not to “neglect our local courthouse”.  What are some tangible ways that we can bring our tender and broken hearts to the town square in order to fight for justice?
  6. Habakkuk states the very center and foundation of the Gospel's message  (2:4)   "Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him, but the just shall live by faith."
    • What circumstances in your life tempt your soul to be “lifted up / puffed up” with pride?
    • If you and someone convicted of a violent crime were praying together, which of the two of you would you imaging needs the Gospel more desperately?
