Scripture Reference: Daniel 5: 1-9 / Romans 6: 4; 6; 13

  1. Before jumping into Daniel 5; re-read Daniel 4: 36-37 and discuss the trajectory of the life of King Nebuchadnezzar.  What aspects of his life give you an indication that his heart was regenerated before he died, and that he is spending eternity in the presence of the Lord?
  2. Now read through Daniel 5: 1-9 and consider the actions of King Belshazzar.  Find two specific examples that show stark differences between Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar in living a life built on pride or humility.
  3. As we see God “crashing the party of arrogance” being thrown by King Belshazzar, consider your own grace story.  Is there a time in your life when you experienced God interrupting your life in an unexpected but timely fashion?
  4. Phil described the heart that is ready to surrender to Jesus and go under the water of baptism in this way:
    • Humble
    • Vulnerable
    • Teachable
    • Broken
    • No longer blaming circumstances or others
    • Looking within and asking God, “what in me is sabotaging me?”
    • Seeking heart transformation, not simply behavior modification

Share with one another how one of the baptism testimonies inspired or encouraged you in your faith and walk with the Lord.  What themes stood out to you, as you listened to the testimonies from our sisters and brothers?

  1. Read verses 4, 6, and 13 in Romans Chapter 6.  What aspect of the Gospel’s good news jumps out at you as foundational for how you will choose to live your life today?

Closing Prayer:

God, give me the humility and strength to cut out of my life whatever I’m addicted to—whatever I keep running to out of compulsion.

Help me let go of what entangles me and teach me to cling to You instead.

Because only You bring real life, real freedom, and lasting hope.  Amen
