Read James 1:19-27

Pray for an open heart to see and hear where Jesus wants to transform your life. Radical heart transformation is possible when we seek God and ask Him for help. We want to be transformed by the radical love of Jesus and the grace of God the Father.

  1. James was bold and “in your face” about how a relationship with Jesus radically transformed his heart. He did not keep the transformation of his heart private, it was a very public thing. How can we learn from this example, especially when we answer the question, “What’s going on in your life?” Share about any obstacles or struggles you may have when sharing about the good news of Jesus, especially with non-believers.
  2. Phil shared that “religion” in today’s world focuses on striving outwardly to earn God’s grace. But only Jesus can make us right with God, through a relationship with him. Talk with your group about the differences between “religion” and “relationship,” encourage one another to be authentic worshippers of God.
  3. Read James 1:26-27, Matthew 15:18, Ephesians 4:29. Authentic worship is revealed in our communication, because our words make visible the conditions of our hearts. What relationship or area in your life do you need prayer for with your communication? Maybe with your spouse, a family member, coworker, neighbor, friend.
  4. Authentic worship is also revealed in the people that we serve - are there ways that you, individually, or as a life group, can be an extension of God’s love and mercy to a person or group who is suffering?
  5. Finally, what steps can you take to keep yourself from being polluted by the world? Thinking specifically in terms of influence, social media, shows or television, the news (Ex: unfollow/unsubscribe from unhealthy content).
