Scripture Reference: James 3:1-12

  1. Read Verses 1-2
    • Phil reminded us that even if we are not Bible teachers we are still impacted by this lesson, because we are all sometimes “at fault for what we say”.
    • Why is it critical to take responsibility for our words?
    • Verses that expand on this point:
      • Proverbs 18:21; Proverbs 12:18; Psalm 141:3
  2. Read Verses 3-4
    • What additional areas of communication beyond the spoken word need to be considered when we think of our entire lives being controlled and reflected by an organ as small as “the tongue”?
    • Share an example of a time that you regretted your words, a sent email, a social media post, etc.
  3. Read Verses 7-8
    • Why should we be encouraged as believers, rather than beaten down, by James’ observation that NO human being can tame the tongue?
    • In our fast-moving world, what practices and habits are you developing to slow down and be with Jesus?
  4. Read Verses 5-6
    • Using the California wildfires as an example, Phil made the point that we can say something in 10 seconds that can spark a blaze in someone that burns for decades.  Which of these sparks have caused you pain, and which are ones you need to lay before the Lord as He transforms your heart?
      • Unnecessary Criticism – finding fault just to feel right.
      • Sarcasm – humor that cuts instead of heals.
      • Lying – twisting truth for convenience or image.
      • Vulgar Language – cheap words that pollute the soul.
      • Gossip – sharing what isn’t yours to share.
      • Flattery – saying what sounds good but isn’t true.
      • Harshness – using tone as a weapon.
      • Complaining / Grumbling – poisons gratitude and spreads negativity (Phil. 2:14).
      • Exaggeration – distorts truth and erodes trust (Prov. 12:22).
      • Judgmental Speech – condemns instead of restores (Matt. 7:1–2).
      • Name-Calling / Labeling – dehumanizes those made in God’s image (Matt. 5:22).
      • Cold Silence – withholding words as punishment; absence can wound as deeply as presence.
  5. Read Verses 9-12
