Key verse: James 4:1-7
Supporting verses: John 13:34-35; 1 John 2:15-17; Ephesians 2:1-5; Isaiah 61:1
Read James 4:1-7
- True to the rest of his letter, James isn’t mincing words in his instruction and admonition of the church. Examine verses 1-4. What combative or divisive words or phrases do you see?
- The words James uses for ”fights” and ”quarrels” don’t mean just minor irritations or disagreements, but battles and warfare.
- Why are they at war with each other…with some even wanting to commit murder?
- How do their actions and attitudes affect the testimony and effectiveness of the Church?
- Look at these verses through the historical lens of war and warfare.
- Why do wars start? How are they fought? How are they won? What is their aftermath?
- How do these insights inform the seriousness of James’ intent in these verses?
- Desires and passions can be good things. When (how) do they become disordered and destructive things?
- Even though James wrote this 2,000 years ago, his message hits hard today!
- How are his words convicting you?
- Where have your own passions and desires become disordered and destructive (me-focused vs. God-focused)?
- How does 1John 2:15-17 provide perspective and guidance?
- What weapons and tactics does James point us to fight these battles… and win?
- Read Jill’s quote below. How do her words speak to you?
“We see it [living to please ourselves] when what appears to be good desires lead to bad fruit. We see it when the characteristics of godliness are pursued at the expulsion of God Himself, assuming ourselves capable of obtaining/securing love, beauty, justice, etc., apart from Him.
This legalistic, humanistic approach to what is only of God, from God and through God leads to militant ideologies that play out every day in the wars of culture and politics.”
–Jill Carnuccio
- Phil used a chain to powerfully illustrate Ephesians 2:1-5. How does the truth of these verses give you hope and re-focus your eyes (and passions) on Jesus?
