Prayer of Repentance

Series: The Acts of Jesus Through His Church

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,

with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:1-6 ‭ESV‬‬

Confess we have allowed political differences to disrupt our oneness in Him

Psalm 37:1”Do not fret because of evildoers, 3Trust in the Lord and do good.”

Psalm 27:14 - "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

“Father, we as your people confess our lack of  trust in Your wisdom and sovereignty. Together we repent of any and all of our attitudes, of our words and of our deeds that come from a place of impatience for You to work. Forgive  us for our panic and our fretfulness. We repent of our prideful presumptions and expectations in how and when You accomplish Your purposes.”

1 John1:7 “... if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (repeat verse 8)

9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”

“Father, we confess to you any and all hatred in our hearts towards others. We repent of our pride and over-confidence in our own opinions. We confess our own limitations of understanding, our own blindness, and our own rejection of your love in any form.”

4:9 “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.

“ Father, forgive us for losing focus on the beauty, power and absolute relevance of Your Gospel. Have mercy on our lack of faith. Forgive us for our failure to point others to You as the only One who is trustworthy and all-knowing.”

Proverbs 21:30

“There is no wisdom, no understanding, no counsel that can prevail against the LORD.”

“Father- we confess to you our attachment to political parties. Jesus You are not a democrat or a republican. Your kingdom is Yours alone to rule and reign

We confess listening to voices that speak on behalf of a political party more than we listen for your voice. We repent of listening to voices that spur us into more attempts to control, fear and hatred.

1 John 5:21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

“Father God- As your people, we turn away from anything in which and anyone in whom we are putting our ultimate hope  or giving our allegiance to in place of You;

we turn to You, Almighty God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit for our life.

Grant us all the grace and mercy we need to worship You and You alone. Amen”

Life Group Sermon Guide

  1. Doing Life

As a church family, we care about each other’s lives: what we’re celebrating, what we’re mourning, what decisions we are praying through, and everything in between (1 Thessalonians 2:8, Romans 12:10, 15). Suggested time: 10-20 minutes

  • How are you doing?
  • What can you thank God for this week?
  • When were you most aware of Jesus’ presence this week? When were you least aware of Jesus’ presence this week?
  • Do you have any practical needs?
  1. Jesus Centered

God uses His Word to reveal Himself to us, equip us to live the good life He’s designed for us, show us our sin, and strengthen us as we follow Him (2 Timothy 3:16-17, Colossians 1:9-12, and James 1:22-25). Suggested Time: 20-40 minutes

Primary Passages: Acts 2:1-24

  • What does it mean for the Jews to hear all about the mighty works of God in the different languages. (Note: genesis 11 was reversed here in acts! Unity was beginning centering around God!)
  • What voices have you given power over too right now that has diluted the wind and fire of the spirits lead in your life
  • Are you practicing being tuned into God’s presence? Do you need to remove anything (activity, news source, social media outlet etc. ) from your life in order to prioritize tuning your heart to Christ?
  • Do you practice personal confession with God? Is there anything that needs confession in your life? How can we help you break through and fight against this sin?
  1. Engaging the Heart

Jesus calls us to walk in the light, confessing our sins to God and each other. God’s Spirit works through confession and community to lead us to repentance. (Romans 3:23-24, James 5:16 and 1 John 1:5-10) Suggested Time: 10-20 minutes

  • How are you doing abiding with Jesus this week in Scripture and prayer?
  • What sin do you need to confess to God? What are you struggling to trust Jesus with this week? How can you give Him control of it? (As people confess sin, make sure to remind one another of the good news Jesus offers.)
  1. Expanding the Kingdom

Just like God the Father sent Jesus on a mission of reconciliation for us, Jesus sends us out as ambassadors of His reconciliation. We are called to make disciples wherever we go. (John 20:21 and 2 Corinthians 5:18-20) Suggested time: 10-20 minutes

  • People: Who in your life can you be building with right now? What does that look like during this season?
  • Plan: Are there any rhythms planned (virtual or in-person) that we can invite these friends into? What spiritual conversations do you want to initiate with them soon?
  • Pray: Let’s pray for our people by name; pray for their needs, opportunities to connect, and opportunities to have spiritual conversations that help them take next steps toward Jesus.
