Primary Scripture Passage:  Philippians 3: 1-11

  1. In verses 4-6 Paul lists the credentials of his former way of life.  What do you think the “old Paul” would have been like as a friend?
  2. If we think of Paul’s list of credentials as his resume, what would your friends and colleagues say on your behalf if asked to provide a reference to convince a prospective employer that you are a good person?
  3. Why does Paul consider his resume (and ours) to be “rubbish”? (v.8)
  4. Paul uses the Greek word zemioo when he says that he has “suffered” loss.  How has following Christ been costly for you?
  5. What are some areas of legalistic self-righteousness that you struggle with?  How do they get in the way of knowing Christ and rejoicing in the Lord?
  6. If you were to write the story of your current or present life, what would the first sentence be?  What do you notice in what you wrote?  What does it say about you and about God?  Reflect and discuss.
