An Interview With Dave Wiedis
Editor’s Note:
We are excited to announce that in July our Providence Church family has a strategic
opportunity to experience and share the gospel in a completely original and creative
way. Our very own Miho Kahn will be performing her one-woman performance, Clean
Sheets, on Friday and Saturday, July 21-22 here at Providence Church at 7:30 p.m.
We encourage everyone to use this performance to reach out to your neighbors, family
and friends with this unique show. We sat down with Miho’s husband, Dave Wiedis,
Counseling Director at Providence and Executive Director of ServingLeaders Ministries,
to ask him some questions about the performance. Dave manages Clean Sheets.
Q. What is Clean Sheets?
Clean Sheets is a powerful and creative 50-minute one-woman performance
that touches believers and seekers alike. It is the redemptive story of Miho's journey
out of drugs and violence, into an unexpected relationship with Christ. Her story
contains elements of drug abuse, violence, a serial killer, rape, abortion, and domestic
abuse. It also weaves together themes of faith, doubt, prayer, evil, redemption,
and God’s powerful deliverance and manages to touch every segment of the population.
Therefore, it is highly appropriate for those who would never consider coming to
church, and for those who have experienced pain, suffering, doubt or those who are just
struggling with their faith.
Q. Frankly, a lot of “Christian drama” is corny, campy and generally makes me cringe.
I certainly wouldn’t bring a person who is seeking to most of the “Christian dramas” I
have seen. What makes Clean Sheets different?
Clean Sheets is different because it is an intelligent and powerful presentation told in
story form, without using any of the typical Christian clichés. Miho does not “tell” her
story, she “becomes” the characters! It is quite intense but somehow she manages to
have you laughing hysterically and feeling deeply about things that you may never have
experienced. I often describe it like being on a roller coaster! One reviewer described it
like this:
“Brutally honest and beautifully told, Miho Kahn's life, like all of ours, has it's ups and
downs, but hers takes on twists and turns to the extreme. With her compass spinning
wildly, her roller coaster of experiences are a parents’ worst nightmare with a very
unexpected outcome. Kahn has a beautiful voice and an amazing stage presence and
weaves her story into a tapestry of characters, each so real it is hard to believe it is a
one woman show. You can not walk away without being deeply affected as well as
entertained.”

Q. How do people react when they see Clean Sheets?
We have been astounded at the response and at how popular the show has become. It
resonates with people at a deep level. Most sit in utter amazement both at the story,
and the range of performance that Miho gives. Many women line up after to talk to
Miho to share their experiences. Most people leave the performance deeply touched
by God’s grace and power. One of my graduate students, who had been sexually
abused as a child, was understandably cautious about coming to see Clean Sheets. She
wrote me the following after she saw the performance:
“I just wanted to tell you that being able to experience your wife's story . . . was
absolutely touching. I was nervous about going to see Clean Sheets because I was afraid
that it would hit too close to home and jar me, and I didn't want to see what I already
knew so well. As I watched and was drawn deeply into your wife's story, I saw myself
being set free just as she has been, from the bonds of being held to the horrors of my
past. It need not define who I am nor who I am becoming as I begin to know the true
love of Jesus as my own. I wanted to thank Miho for bearing so much of her heart and
being so real with us. Thank you for helping me to see and experience this truth in a
real way.”
Q. You and Miho do a Q & A at the end of each performance. Why do you do that?
We love to debrief with the audience because it gives them, and us, a chance to process
what they have just experienced. We love to hear people’s comments, and because it is
such a unique presentation, it is really helpful for people to put words to what they are
feeling. Also, many people want to ask Miho questions about her experiences in life and
in performing Clean Sheets. We have found that people like the Q & A as much as the
show. And, just a note - - we are planning on doing something very special at the end of
our performance this time, if possible!
Q. If someone has already seen Clean Sheets, is it worth seeing again?
Absolutely!! Clean Sheets is live theater and Miho performs it differently every time. I
have probably seen it over two hundred times and there is never the same performance
twice. Most people who see it want to come back to see it again and tell us that they
get more out of it each time. And, of course, many regret that they did not bring their
friends or family.
Q. What is it like for you to see it over and over again?
You would think I would get used the story and even get numb to it. Actually, there is
not a performance where I don’t feel some aspect of it very deeply. I’m always
powerfully moved in some way.
Q. Where has Clean Sheets been performed?
Clean Sheets has been performed in a broad range of venues including theaters,
churches, prisons, rehab centers, and schools with audiences as large as 1,000 people
and as small as 5 people. We have traveled to and performed it for the underground
church in China, twice in India, Beirut Lebanon, Haiti, and on a ship in the Aegean Sea
near Turkey and throughout the Northeast and South U.S. The response has been
overwhelming.
Q. Why is Providence doing two performances of Clean Sheets?
We are performing Clean Sheets two nights in a row because our experience is that
when people see it, their reaction is that they want to come back and bring their friends,
family, and neighbors. It really touches people deeply and when you leave with some
friends, believe me, you will have a lot to talk about. It really opens the doors to
people’s hearts and gives you a common place to talk about the real issues of life.
I really hope that our Providence Church family takes advantage of this strategic
opportunity. It does contain adult themes and language. Even though there is nothing
in show that people don’t see on TV, we always let people know that it may not be
appropriate for children under 12.
