Rebellion              Repentance             Restoration
Anchor Verse
Acts 3: 18-20

“But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus.”

1.)   Rebellion

Rebelling means to be disobedient or to go against. Sin is enticing. It begins with excitement and there is an attraction to it. All sin is rebellion.

The natural response to sin and rebellion is not repentance but hiding. It starts in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve both hide from God.

How do you respond to sinful decisions in your life?
-hide/coverup
-rationalize
-minimize
-blame others
-pride and fear of consequences
-don’t admit being wrong

God has laid out a way for us to have choices that lead to life and a way that leads to death. When we choose to ignore God’s way, we do it to our own demise. (Romans 6:23)

Sin always hurts others. Think about sins in your past and the impact they have had on others around you. What sin(s) are you currently walking through and who do you believe it may be negatively impacting?

2.)   Repentance

A frequent misconception of God’s character is that He is a God of wrath and condemnation who waits for us to clean up our own sin. There is an enemy hard at work who wants us to believe this lie. But what we know is that God’s pursuit of us is so boundless that He sent His perfect Son to pay the penalty for our sins and set us free.

Reference John 8: 36

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

 Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Does this help shape your ideas and understanding of the character of the Lord? How can you gift this truth to others who may have never heard Him referenced in this way before?
Reference Psalm 32 and read aloud, marinating the words that David was writing.

Now read James 5:16

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

This verse places a significant importance of bringing our sins to light together and tells us of our healing when confessing aloud to others. Bringing sin into the light diminishes the enemy’s stronghold over your sins.

As a group, consider pairing off and spend time in confession with each other and pray for each other.

3.)   Restoration

Read Luke 23: 40-42

Our deeds don’t save us, our faith in Jesus Christ does. Faith as small as a mustard seed is enough. God is never done restoring each of us. No one is too far gone.

End in a prayer of gratitude to the Lord for sending Jesus to save us.
Thank you God, that even in our sin, You pursue us.

Thank you God, that You continue to speak to us.

Thank you God, for Your discipline and correction.

Thank you God, for the gift of repentance.

Thank you God, for Your Son Jesus.
