“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

  1. At the time of Jesus' birth, the Jews were waiting and longing for their loving expected Messiah.  Instead of arriving as a conquering king who would destroy their enemies, what was at the heart of the justice that Jesus delivered?
  2. While Jesus came as God’s only begotten Son, how and why does “Everlasting Father” serve as a fitting name for Jesus?  Read John 14: 8-10 to see how Jesus explained to the questioning Philip how He shows us the heart of the Father.
  3. Even the best of earthly fathers has a bad day now and again, and all will one day leave this earth.  How do you derive comfort from being a child of the Everlasting Father, looking at the Hebrew word for Everlasting which is “Avi’ad” meaning timeless, permanent, or eternal?
  4. Read Psalm 139: 13-16 and reflect on how the reality that God delights in you as a beloved child impacts your soul.  If you are a parent, how do you inwardly and outwardly delight in each of your children?
  5. We are shown in Hebrews 12: 5-7 that when we receive the Lord’s discipline it is because He loves us and accepts us as sons and daughters.  Has there been a time when you have been tempted to grow weary or lose heart when experiencing hardship?
  6. Phil illustrated a soft sponge receiving water from a pitcher and then the water flowing through, as an example of how God’s love can overflow from our hearts if we are willing to receive it.  In contrast, if we guard our hearts (wrap them in foil), God’s love is not absorbed into our souls.  Discuss how this example impacted you, and if appropriate, humbly pray for God to do the work of removing any barriers to His love for you.
