Primary Scripture Passage:  Mark 13: 1-37

  1. The final page of the Bible contains its final prayer – turn to Revelation 22:20 and discuss how this prayer makes you feel.  Is this a prayer that you pray regularly or one that makes you feel uncomfortable?
  2. Jesus rocks the world of his disciples after one of them marvels over the wonder and beauty of the temple (v. 1-2).  How does this statement set the stage for the disciples coming to grips with what will last for eternity versus what is merely temporal?
  3. After Jesus’ inner circle (Peter, James, John and Andrew) ask Jesus privately for more information on what kind of sign they can expect before “these things are accomplished”.
  4. As he begins to provide examples, what words does Jesus use to help prepare his disciples to understand what the end times will be like?
  5. What advice does he give regarding the timing of these events?
  6. Based on what we know has/has not happened during the time since Jesus gave this discourse on the Mount of Olives, how should we understand Jesus’ words in verse 30: “Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.”
  7. Read the parallel account written by Matthew 24: 1- 35.
  8. In verse 12, Jesus says, “And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.”  Thinking back to the volatility of 2020 and other tensions that remain in our world today, did you experience a foretaste of love growing cold with any friends or family members?
  9. One of Jesus’ primary exhortations to both the disciples and to the future church (us) is found in verses 5-6:  “See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray.”
  10. With what repeated theme are we encouraged by Jesus? (See v. 5; 9; 23; 33; 35; 37)
  11. How does Paul encourage Timothy (and us) in 2 Timothy 3:13-14?
  12. What are some of the “dangers of deception” that Phil discussed in his sermon
  13. What tangible steps can we take today to walk by faith and not by fear?
  14. In terms of how we prioritize our lives and pursuits, how do Jesus’ words in verse 31 provide both direction and comfort?
