Date: January 7, 2024 Speaker: Phil Carnuccio

Series: Disciple Sermon: Engaging the Word of God and Why It’s Worth It- Part 1  Primary Scriptures: John 1:1, 4, 14; 6:51; 10:10; 14:6; 17:3 and Matthew 4:4

  1. How would you describe your relationship with God’s Word: distant or close; deep or shallow; consistent or inconsistent/sporadic; infatuated/cannot get enough or bored;  confused or understanding; head or heart?
  2. How does this relationship with God’s Word compare to your relationship with God or any part of the Trinity? Is it similar or different? How different or similar?  3. Think about your behaviors/actions with God’s Word. What do these behaviors indicate about the value you place on it?
  3. Phil listed six things about Jesus (the Word) in Oh, That’s True. Discuss how each or  any of these impacts your perspective about your relationship with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
  4. Truth #1 – John 14:6 – Jesus is Life – He creates all life and sustains all life. All things were created by Him and for Him and through Him. Jesus is the

Resurrection and the Life. His Life conquers all death. No one comes to the  Father except through Jesus/ the Word.

  1. Truth #2 – John 10:10 – Jesus who is Life came to implant in you - not just life but abundant Life. We can be alive, living, and breathing, but not have life.  c. Truth #3 – John 17:3 –Jesus said this eternal life that they know the only true God and Jesus Christ. We do not always experience an abundant life since we think knowing is about knowing facts. This word, know, is about an intimate, relational connection with Him.
  2. Truth #4 – John 1:1, 4, 14 – In the beginning (creation) was the Word…. In Him  was Life…. the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. If we are to grow in this abundant life, God is giving us His Word.
  3. Truth #5 – Matthew 4:4 – We live on every Word that comes from the mouth of  God. We need to digest the Word in our hearts.
  4. Truth #6 – John 6:51 – Whoever eats/digests this Bread (the Word) will live forever. You cannot separate the intimacy of knowing Jesus relationally from the intimacy of regularly digesting His Word into your soul.
  5. His Word is our spiritual nutrition. How many times a week are you eating? Are you spiritually dying?
  6. Is Jesus your everything, your life? If not, what is preventing this from being a reality/  What are the more important things (idols) that are standing in your way?  7. Do you see growing in intimacy and relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit as a choice? Deuteronomy 30:19-20a (ESV) says, “I call heaven and earth to witness against  you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose  life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice  and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days.”
  7. Do you want to grow in your intimacy with God this year? If yes, what will be you  scripture diet plan (e.g., The Bible Recap (https://www.thebiblerecap.com/); YouVersion

  1. Scripture has sustained the life of those at Prov who have walked decades in a relationship with God. How has it already sustained you? Testify about these times.  10. Have you memorized scripture? Will you commit to memorizing at least one verse a  month?
