1. When Jesus took Peter, James and John (his “inner-inner circle”) up a high mountain, what spiritual reality about himself did he want to reveal by way of his physical transfiguration?
2. What are some examples found elsewhere in the Bible that make the connection between God and light? (see Exodus 34:29-35; Psalm 27:1; John 8:12 for examples)
3. What is the significance of the appearance of Moses with Jesus, specifically concerning the covenants mediated by each of them?
4. What is the significance of the appearance of Elijah with Jesus, specifically in the context of the prophecy found in Malachi 4:5?
5. When God the Father interrupts the conversation and commands the disciples to listen to Jesus, what is the significance that, when they look up, Moses and Elijah are gone and only Jesus remains?
6. Coming down from the mountain, the disciples asked Jesus a question about why the scribes taught that Elijah must precede the Messiah. Read the account in Matthew 17:12-13 and also Luke 1:17 as you discuss how Jesus explained this to them.
7. Application Point #1 – Listen Up

8. Application Point #2 – Let Go
a. Discuss times when you have let your desires or preconceived notions blur your vision of the true Jesus. What can you let go of in order to see Jesus more clearly?
9. Application Point #3 – Lean In
a. As you wrestle with unanswered questions, are you tempted to follow the disciples' example in Mark 9:32 (“But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.”)? What steps can you take to lean in and trust that Jesus can handle your questions and sympathize with your weaknesses?
