Follow Along with the Message

1. How do you handle times of distress and difficulty?

2. In the past, what has been your refuge?

3. What has God designed us to do in the experiences that cause distress?

Leader's Note: We have been designed to lean on God. If we find solace in someone else or something else, we won't find Him.

4. Adullam was a cave where David went to escape his troubles. Todd suggested that Adullam is a place where we find out who we are without the security or refuge of things or people we have put our trust in. What are some things that David learns from his experience in the cave of Adullam? Read Psalm 142, Psalm 57 and Psalm 34 to discover what David learns in the cave.

Leader's Note: David learns that the state he is in does not define him. There are treasures in the dark. He learns to cry out to God in honesty. David reminds himself continually that God is his refuge. David remembers the great things that God has done.

5. Why is honesty before God or our family and friends so difficult?

6. What do you need to be honest about before the Lord?

7. How does remembering your baptism or commitment to the Lord help you overcome the challenges of life?

8. How does opening your cave to others change the nature of your distress?

9. Pray that regardless of your circumstances Jesus will be lifted up and magnified.
